Kaz talks a little about his reasons for wanting to go to Ohio, despite worrying about seeing his family. He already talked about them some in chapter 6 when he and Alex were on the ferris wheel, so we (and Alex) know that he’s not out to them. Last time he didn’t have any plans to come out, but it sounds like his feelings about that are changing.

Alex: Kaz… besides what you said about tonight… is everything… okay?
Kaz: My mom called earlier today. She wants me to come home for Christmas. I tried to say no, but… I ended up saying I’d go.
I’m not out to my family. I don’t know how they would take it. It terrifies me to even think of them finding out. And yet…
I guess a part of me wants to see if their views have changed. I had a boyfriend once before, but… this is my first really serious relationship. Someday I want to be able to tell them.
Alex: I get that, but… it sounds like this is really weighing heavily on you.
You don’t have to go if it’s really stressing you out. You don’t have to tell her all the reasons why, but I think your mom will understand if you say no.
Kaz: I know… but I feel like I need to do this.
