Aaaand we're out of villains for this sequence. ^^ Been fun but we'll have to switch to something else for the remainder of this filler.
It's really appropriate that we end on The Insomniac; he was actually the first villain idea we came up for the series. We had a few other villain ideas in mind going in, I think it was him, The Night Terror, Marvelous Man, Martina (Who was originally REALLY different), a villain we haven't met yet, and a forgotten one we're probably not going to use (maybe). But Insomniac was the first and he's maybe the one that I'm the most fond of the result even just sitting here typing.
My family kinda always has had a really awkward relationship with sleep; we were a dysfunctional household with a lot of night people and somebody was always waking somebody else up, so a lot of us were sleep deprived at different points. Even today as an adult I wake up every few hours and can't stay asleep for prolonged periods, and I probably don't get enough of it. That kinda left an impact as I could see the effects sleep deprivation had on family members.
Plus while I'd been into super-hero stories since grade school, I distinctly remember the moment that made me the hardcore comic book nerd I am now, and it was the Justice League episode "Only A Dream" in which the telepathic villain Dr. Destiny trapped the League in their own nightmares. The episode struck me in a particular place and pushed me into a rabbithole that led to me to buy up and read all the superhero comics I could get my hands on, which grew in time to wanting to make my own comic, spurred in no small part due to my friendship with Martin. ^_^
Since Blues is a collection of things I love, I couldn't wait to include a nod to that episode with The Insomniac, trying to draw with the idea and threat of a telepathic villain with an edge that made you feel sorry for him and was cursed with an inability to dream. The three chapters in which he appears are all bangers for me, and I'm so, so happy in all the chances I've had to write him.
.... Man, talking on this has me nostalgic. I really can't wait to draw more on the comic later. But I guess it's appropriate that first I need to get a nap....
