Carciphonas, victims of spiritual contamination at birth, are condemned to a short and painful life. They cannot survive pass adolescence, but the few who defy this fact would bring the world to its knees.

In a world teeming with magic, where existence itself is made of spirits, the once beloved Demon magic is now despised and forbidden. Four years ago, the Prohibition sprang from the trail of corpses left behind by an infamous assassin. Blackbird, they called her, and a Carciphona, they insisted she must be, for she was said to defy magic itself. Warriors and royalty alike were felled by her, and in fear, the people grasped for a cause. If it took giving up Demon magic to prevent Carciphonas like her from appearing again, then so be it, the world decreed.

And so it was that the screams of the murders fell silent again, as did the songs of Demon magic beneath this tense mist. Fake or real, people settled back into their prized peace, and looked the other way.
